The electro-mechanical component of the vehicle's ignition system that directs high voltage pulses to the spark plug wires at the correct time. The distributor shaft is designed to mesh with a gear on the camshaft. As the camshaft rotates, the distributor shaft turns. The distributor switches a high voltage secondary circuit from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the proper firing sequence via the ignition rotor. This ensures that the firing of the spark matches the rotation of the shaft.
