When opening the tailgate, these cables hold the tailgate assembly level to the truck bed surface for easier access. The cables can either be made of steel cables or can be chains with rubber or nylon protective covers. Both styles are completely removable on the lower end for total detachment of the tailgate assembly. This does increase the risk for tailgate theft, but specially designed locks are available.
